Rabs made five changes to their starting line-up bringing in Coakley, Miller, Murray, McLachlan and McAleenan. Two former Rabs players Alaister Martin and Tony Chalmers were in the Ashfield side.
The visitors should have taken an early lead but Ferguson fired wide, at the other end Connolly headed a Miller cross wide of the target. There was little between the sides and with both sets of defences well in control, chances were few with both keepers having a fairly quiet afternoon.
Rabs were awarded a free-kick at the edge of the penalty box, but McAleenan sent his effort high over the bar. Minutes before the half-time break Diack sent a cross deep into the Ashfield penalty box but failed to find a team-mate.
Rob Roy 0 v Ashfield 0.
The first real chance of the second half fell to Ashfield with Martin's curling free-kick only clearing Robertson's bar by inches before the home keeper was back in action when he tipped a McShane shot round the post.
The visitors took the lead in the 52nd minute when a corner was headed back into the goalmouth by Brand to Jamie Darroch to fire the ball past Robertson. Rabs then made a couple of tactical changes by bringing on Easton and Adam for Coakley and Bradley. Ashfield should have increased their lead but the lively McCann saw his shot blocked by Robertson.
In the final stages Rabs upped their game and at last the home support had something to shout about. Hall gathered an Easton flick, the keeper then blocked a Meechan shot who had his follow up headed off the line. In the 78th minute Rabs made their third change sending on Ohakam.
With only 12 minutes remaining Rabs grabbed the equaliser after a fine attacking move giving Steven Meechan the chance to drive the ball low into the corner of the net. In the 85th minute Rabs completed an amazing comeback when Hall's attempted clearance following a Brand pass-back was charged down by Iain Diack the ball broke to the striker who had the easy task of sending it into the empty net.
In an attempt to scrape something out of the game Ashfield poured forward, Diack helping out his defence blocked a goal-bound shot and Robertson punching a corner clear in a crowded goalmouth. Substitute Adam could have added a third for Rabs in stoppage time but Hall managed to finger-tip his effort for a corner.
Full-Time; Rob Roy 2 v Ashfield 1.
Verdict;- The tactical changes made the difference for Rabs. After a very even first half, Ashfield took the lead and looked like holding on for all three points until the Adamslie side's dramatic comeback.
Ref Watch;- Speaking to www.robroy.org.uk after the game Rabs boss Jimmy Lindsay felt Referee Stephen Brown controlled the game well and that it was a good performance by all three officials. |
