Rabs two new signings defender Mathew Sheridan (Hamilton Accies) and goalkeeper Scott Wilson (Armadale Thistle) were on the bench for this Emirates Scottish Junior Cup 4th Round tie.
Rabs began on the attack and nearly took the lead in the second minute whem Brian Wardle headed a Stewart Maxwell cross against the Kilbirnie crossbar. Minutes later an Anderson lay off gave Feroz a chance at goal but the striker dragged his shot wide of the goal, at the other end Bell produced a fine stop from Longworth.
Rabs took the lead in the 11th minute when Feroz was fouled 25 yards out, Kevin MacDonald's free-kick found the top corner of McCann's net. Ladeside hit back with Longworth's effort deflected wide, Chang's corner was easily cleared.
Home keeper McCann did well to cut out a dangerous Carter cross but a minute later could do nothing to prevent Rabs doubling their lead when Paul McQuilken got on the end of a MacDonald free-kick to head over the keeper and into the net.
Rabs were looking to increase their lead, McKay and Carberry had powerful drives blocked then at the other end Longworth was brought down by Murray three yards outside the Rabs penalty box, McMahon curled his kick over the bar and a good chance was wasted. However Ladeside pulled one back a minute before the break when Jamie Longworth collected an Anderson pass to fire low past Bell.
Half Time; Kilbirnie Ladeside 1 v Rob Roy 2.
As expected Ladeside came out chasing the equaliser and Rabs were under the cosh but some solid defending and a couple of brilliant saves by Kevin Bell kept the Ayrshire side at bay. The hard working Feroz often operating alone up front had a decent effort just wide of the post then a Murray header looped over the bar with McCann out of position.
MacKay broke into the Ladeside penalty box but shot wide when a pass to a well placed Feroz was a better option. Kinney had a shot blocked then Longmuir headed over the bar as Ladeside went all out for the equalising goal. With 15 minutes remaining Rabs made their first substitution sending on new signing defender Sheridan for MacKay.
Kilbirnie had loud claims for penalties when Longworth then Kelly went down in the box under challenges but Referee McLennan waved them aside.
Rabs keeper Bell was in super form pushing a Kelly free-kick past the post then diving to punch another effort clear. Then with 10 minutes remaining Rabs killed the game stone dead with a well executed goal, Grant Anderson dashed down the right wing, his speed taking him past a defender before sending in a perfect cross to the unmarked Craig Feroz at the back post and the striker lashed the ball high into the net. The scorer was then promptly booked for his shirtless celebrations.
With Rabs effectively in the 5th round hat, they coasted the final minutes bring on substitutes Vaugh and Fulton for Murray and Anderson.
Full Time; Kilbirnie Ladeside 1 v Rob Roy 3.
Verdict; Rabs were up for this one from the start. never allowing Ladeside to settle and deserved to go two ahead. The second half was always going to be difficult but with Kevin Bell in fine form and a resolute defence chances were few for the home strikeforce who were unable to turn their possession into goals. This was a superb team effort, a victory earned by sheer effort and determination by a side without a single failure. The players and management team deserved their ovasion from the Kirky following at the end of the game.
Ref Watch; Neil McLennan refused to be intimidated by the partizan home crowd who howled for every decision to go their way. Generally calling all major decisions correctly but didn't endear himself to the Kilbirnie fans when turning down two penalty claims. Over the 90 minutes the East Region whistler had a decent game. |
