Rabs brought in Brian McKay and Brian Wardle from Pollok, Jamie Docherty returns after his 3 match ban.
Rabs took the game to Vale in the early stages with keeper Johnstone saving McKay's low shot then Wardle's header landed on top of the net. Rabs took the lead in the 17th minute, from a MacDonald free-kick Wardle headed back into the goalmouth where Lennox was first to react knocking the ball forward to allow Michael Hughes to net fron close range.
Docherty sent Hughes through but a timely tackle prevented his progress. As the half wore on Vale were threatening the home goal, O'Donnell fired high and wide before Sinclair shot a 22 yard free-kick against the Rabs defensive wall. The visitors squandered a great chance to equalise when a long McMillan free-kick was headed on to Hadden and with only Cawley to beat headed over. Four minutes before the break Kenna shot over the bar when well placed. On the stroke of half time Sinclair who had been booked 4 minutes earlier was shown another by Referee Robertson and had to walk.

With the man advantage Rabs began to dominate, Fulton's cross was flicked on by Carberry but Johnstone was equal to it, a minute later Fulton sent over a perfect cross but Jones failed to head past the Vale keeper, the shotstopper was in action a minute later when he fisted a 30 yard free-kick clear.
Rabs were denied their second goal by the far side assistant when Wardle's header rebounded off the post to Docherty who headed into the net but the flag was raised for offside. In the 61st minute Rabs replaced Docherty with McQuilken then 8 minutes later Gray for Fulton.
In the 72nd minute Gray hammered a free-kick against the junction of post and bar, In the 76th minute Rabs sealed the game when Gray out wide on the right sent Paul McQuilken clear and the substitute ran through on goal to double Rabs lead.
With 10 minutes remaining Vale were down to 9 men when McDivett was shown a second yellow card for a foul on McKay, the Rabs man was unable to continue and was replaced by Moore, In the final minutes both Carberry and Moore sent efforts over the bar as Rabs ran out comfortable winners in the end.

Verdict; The first points on the board for Rabs. Not a silky performance by Rabs but nevertheless three welcome points against a stuffy Vale side let down once again by indisclipline.
Ref Watch; Referee Paul Robertson had a busy afternoon, few may argue over some of his bookings and dismissals but overall generally called the main decisions correctly. |
